Discover Kingsbridge
Kingsbridge may be a small historic market town, but it has an excellent range of amenities, a fascinating past and plenty to see and do during your stay.
With a history stretching back more than 800 years, Kingsbridge developed around an ancient crossing between two royal estates, from which the town is believed to have taken its name. By the early 13th century it was already established as a market town, and over the centuries milling, coastal trading and shipbuilding all played a part in shaping the character of the area. In fact Malcolm’s great great grandfather was a shipwright in Kingsbridge.
Today, the town has a leisure centre with swimming pool, parks and play areas, a skate park, supermarkets, a local history museum and a three-screen cinema. You will also find a wonderful selection of independent shops, cafés, traditional pubs and restaurants throughout the town.
At the heart of Kingsbridge is its beautiful estuary, surrounded by the rolling countryside of the South Hams. The estuary and its surrounding landscape are particularly rich in wildlife, and visitors may occasionally be fortunate enough to spot seals, seabirds and even dolphins.
There are plenty of opportunities to enjoy the water, including paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing, while small boats and canoes can also be launched locally.
One of the loveliest ways to experience the estuary is aboard the passenger ferry between Kingsbridge and Salcombe. The scenic journey takes around 35 minutes each way and normally operates between April and October, subject to tides.
Kingsbridge is also an excellent base from which to discover the sandy beaches, secluded coves and spectacular countryside of the South Hams, as well as the South West Coast Path and the beautiful coastline of South Devon.
A little further afield, visitors can explore some of the area’s most distinctive landmarks. Start Point offers dramatic coastal scenery, wonderful walks and its historic lighthouse, while Burgh Island is famous for its Art Deco hotel, its connections with Agatha Christie and its unusual sea tractor, which carries passengers across the water when the tide covers the sandy causeway.
Golfers can also enjoy the beautiful coastal golf course at nearby Thurlestone.
Whether you prefer exploring a historic market town, spending time on the water, walking along the coast, discovering hidden beaches or simply enjoying good food beside the estuary, Kingsbridge makes a wonderful base from which to experience this very special part of South Devon.
